The ASSOCIATION OF SUMMER THEATRES 'ROUND ONTARIO (A.S.T.R.O.), founded in 1985, is a network of professional theatres committed to the support, growth, and cultivation of summer theatre in Ontario. By fostering partnerships, developing collaborative marketing strategies, sharing information and networking with a creative, co-operative spirit, A.S.T.R.O. will provide vital artistic and economic opportunities for all of its participants.

Members of A.S.T.R.O. are dedicated to producing quality entertainment and to developing active partnerships in their respective communities in order to enhance both the economic and cultural life of Ontario.

A.S.T.R.O. publishes an annual brochure, SUMMER THEATRE IN ONTARIO, and maintains this website in order to promote the professional activities of its members. Our membership year runs from November 1 to October 31. There is an Annual General Meeting each fall in a different member location.

A.S.T.R.O. MEMBERSHIP CRITERIA

Any theatre company may become a member of A.S.T.R.O. if it satisfies the following conditions:
1. Its mandate includes the production of summer theatre in Ontario.
2. It operates as a “professional” theatre company. [**see criteria below]
3. It has satisfied these conditions for at least one summer season.
4. It must pay an annual membership fee in full, prior to joining.

**Criteria for “professional”:
A company is considered professional if it has paid staff, as well as paid artists, and operates in a manner which is recognized by its peers. Typically, professional artists have completed basic training in their fields, devote a significant proportion of their energies to practicing their art, seek remuneration for their work and are acknowledged as peers by others working in their field.

IN ORDER TO DETERMINE ELIGIBILITY FOR ASTRO MEMBERSHIP, PLEASE SUPPLY THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION TO INFO@SUMMERTHEATRE.ORG :
1.Company name & contact info [mailing address, phone, fax, website, email]

2. Company structure [registered or incorporated, non-profit, for-profit, charitable #, co-op or collective, ad hoc, etc.]; do you have a board of directors?

3. Senior staff & correct titles [eg. Artistic Director and General Manager]

4. Description of company aims/mandate

5. Performance venue(s) & location(s)

6. What was your overall budget last year?

7. How many shows did you produce last year between May 24 and Sept. 1?
[NOTE: only shows that originated in your theatre; not shows you presented]

8. How many paid full-time administrative staff do you have?

9. How many paid technical staff?

10. Do you pay ALL artistic staff? eg. directors, designers, actors. If not, please explain.

11. How many Equity artists did you employ last year? # of Actors? # of Stage Managers? # of Directors?

ASTRO relies upon its members to provide vital information each year to by used for research and analysis as well as promotional activities and advocacy. This information may include surveys and questionnaires as well as some statistical data.

ASTRO members adhere to the following policies:

  • To operate in a professional manner that reflects the best ethical business practices of the profession including non-discrimination in hiring, anti-sexual harassment, and health and safety.

  • To credit playwrights of all Canadian plays on the ASTRO website and wherever else possible.

  • To support ASTRO by participating in meetings, activities and events and promoting the organization whenever possible.
